Our Families®

Our Families (Grade 1) is designed to provide practical information about family members and their interdependence. This program is delivered as a series of five 30-minute activities recommended for students in grade one. The self-contained program kit includes detailed activity plans for the volunteer and materials for 30 students.

ACTIVITIES KEY LEARNING OBJECTIVES
One:Our Families
  • The students better understand what a family is by studying a poster. They discover how people in a family are alike and different and how they work together to make the place where they live a good place to live.

  • Recognize how people live and work together in a family
Two:Our Families’ Needs and Wants
  • The students become aware that all families must have food, clothing, and shelter to live, and they begin to understand the difference between a want and a need.
  • Explain the difference between a want and a need
Three:Finding Our Families’ Needs and Wants
  • The students use a floor map to discover where members of a family would go to obtain their wants and needs.
  • Interpret map symbols
  • Place various symbols for business and services on a map
  • Recognize how family members depend on businesses to provide their wants and needs
Four:Our Families’ Jobs
  • The students learn how jobs provide for family members’ wants and needs. They draw pictures of family members doing their jobs.
  • Review the difference between a want and a need
  • Identify places where people work
Five:Our Families’ Tools
  • The students learn about important skills people need for the workforce. They identify and describe some common tools and associate each with the skills it requires.
  • Become familiar with the meaning of tools and skills
  • Recognize that jobs require such skills as reading, writing, using numbers, and listening
