Junior Achievement volunteers are business and community members who bring real-world perspectives and experiences into the classroom. Acting as positive role models, volunteers lead weekly discussions and activities as they help students develop teamwork and leadership skills.

VOLUNTEER PROFILE
Qualifications
To be a Junior Achievement volunteer, you should possess the following characteristics:

  • Enthusiasm for working with kids
  • Effective communication skills
  • Control of your schedule
  • Belief in the benefits afforded by the free enterprise system

Some also find it helpful to have had 2-3 years of business experience or college equivalent

Responsibilities
Volunteers are expected to:

  • Participate in a training session to become acquainted with the JA curriculum and materials
  • Review activities and consult with the teacher prior to visiting your class
  • Lead weekly activities with the students (see "Time Commitment" below for details)
  • Use the activity plans developed by JA, adding your own unique business experiences
  • Be a positive role model for your students and help them recognize the positive aspects of business and education
Materials
JA provides the necessary curriculum and materials, including activity guides for teachers and volunteers, classroom and take-home materials, and student certificates. Each activity plan contains the following:

  • An overview of the activity
  • Learning objectives
  • Preparation information
  • A detailed presentation script, complete with definitions and discussion points
Time Commitment
The time commitment for JA programs varies by program level. Below are the average times for preparation and classroom visits:

  • Elementary School Program (Grades K-6) - one activity session per week for five weeks
    Preparation: 15-20 minutes
    Class time: 25-45 minutes
  • Middle School Program (Grades 7-9) - one activity session per week for 6-8 weeks
    Preparation: 15-45 minutes
    Class time: 45-55 minutes
  • High School Program (Grades 11-12) - one activity session per week for 8-15 weeks
    Preparation: 30-60 minutes
    Class time: 45-55 minutes
